Patient guide
What should I do if I break a tooth?
A broken tooth can range from a small chip to a deeper fracture. An examination is needed to understand the damage, even when the tooth does not hurt immediately.
Call the dental office
Explain how the tooth broke, whether there is pain or bleeding, and whether the tooth feels loose. Calling early helps the team determine appropriate timing.
Protect the area
Avoid chewing on the affected side. If you can safely locate a broken fragment, keep it and bring it with you. Do not place household adhesives or medications directly on the tooth.
Know when it is more urgent
Call promptly for significant pain, swelling, bleeding, a loose permanent tooth, or a tooth damaged by substantial facial trauma. Seek emergency medical care for life-threatening injuries.
